The Burlington Growth Project at the University of Toronto was started in 1952 and published in the March 2008 Journal of Dentofacial Orthopedics. The project extensively studied the position of teeth with plaster casts of the same individuals from childhood into their 60's and 70's. The result of the study is that all teeth continue to change position throughout life, particularly the lower incisors. The studies strong recommendation is that all orthodontic patients be informed to wear retainers indefinitely, or face the likely possibility of later additional orthodontic care. The few people, who are fortunate enough to have straight teeth without orthodontic treatment, have similar tooth position changes over time. Inorder to maintain their smiles, we have non-orthodontic patients wearing nighttime retainers. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. LEE R. LOGAN, D.D.S., M.S., P.C.
